SANReN Data Transfer & Operating Innovative Networks Workshops – 3 May 2017 (Cape Town) / 4 May 2017 (Pretoria)

(please pass on to colleagues who may be interested and apologies if you receive multiple copies)

Dear beneficiaries and partners

You are cordially invited to attend one of two workshops on

Data Transfer & Operating Innovative Networks

Presented by: Jason Zurawski (LBL/ESnet), Scott Chevalier (Indiana University International Networks) and the SANReN Performance Enhancement Response Team (PERT)

What? This workshop will offer presentations and demonstrations of the science DMZ architecture, data transfer nodes (DTNs), data transfer tools (like GridFTP and Globus) and perfSONAR for network performance measurement and monitoring. “Combined, these technologies are proven to support high-performance, big data science applications, while ensuring the security and availability that modern campuses and laboratories need”1. By the end of the event, attendees will have a better understanding of the requirements for supporting the scientific use of the network, architectural strategies that can simplify these interactions and knowledge of tools that can mitigate problems users may encounter. Detailed agenda attached.

Where?
3 May 2017 – eResearch Conference at University of Cape Town [R500pp; limited sponsorships available from SANReN for selected, eligible beneficiaries] 4 May 2017 – Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Pretoria [free for SANReN beneficiaries / TENET customers]

Who should attend?
a. IT network engineers/technicians from universities, science councils and supporting institutions interested in optimising the network; eResearch / science engagement officers; researchers and scientists with big data transfer needs/challenges.
b. Eligible beneficiaries interested in participating in a SANReN science DMZ and/or DTN proof of concept.

SAFIRE joins eduGAIN

The eduGAIN steering group voted last week to admit the South African Identity Federation, SAFIRE, as its 41st member and the first fully participating member from Africa.

In simple terms, eduGAIN it is the web equivalent of the eduroam wireless roaming service — it is an academic inter-federation with 41 member countries from around the world. South Africa’s membership of eduGAIN will provide local academics and researchers with an easy way to log into over a thousand participating services worldwide using their home organisation’s username and password. Federated identity services play an increasingly critical role in facilitating access to big science projects, and so South Africa’s participation in this space is an important milestone towards allowing South African scientists to collaborate in international research.

Locally, SAFIRE will make it easier for universities and research organisations to collaborate in a wide variety of fields, from teaching and learning through to interdisciplinary research. As it grows, SAFIRE should help the research and education sector realise economies of scale and savings in systems integration costs (in fact, thanks to eduGAIN, many of these integrations may already be done). The federation can also provide participants with more granular mechanisms to control access to expensive electronic resources, such as those provided by university libraries.

Anyone wishing to learn more about identity federation and what it can do for your campus is encouraged to visit https://learn.nsrc.org/fedidm. Information for South African research and education institutions wishing to participate in SAFIRE is available at https://safire.ac.za/participants/idp/

SA NREN parallel event at the CHPC National Meeting 2015

The South African National Research and Education Network (SA NREN) which is constituted out of a partnership collaboration between the SANReN Competency Area at the CSIR Meraka Institute and the Tertiary Education and Research Network of South Africa (TENET), hosted a parallel session at the CHPC National Meeting 2015.

There were a diverse range of presentations at the session. The session chair was Dr. Renier van Heerden.

The following presentations were made:

  • Keynote: Leon Staphorst (SANReN CA) and Duncan Greaves (TENET): The SA NREN as an enabler of South Africa’s Research Community
  • Andrew Wilson, Lucidview: Demonstration on how LucidView uses Big Data to add more value for Security, Trending Analysis and Management
  • Johann Tonsing, Netronome: Software Defined Networking: Concepts, Rationale and Outlook
  • Erasmus Burger, University of Pretoria: Communications and fieldwork in Antarctica, from a field-based scientist’s point of view
  • Prof. Barry Irwin, Rhodes University: SANReN as a research enabler – A darknet case study
  • Roderick Mooi, SANReN CA: Big Data, Faster (aka Operating Innovative Networks)
