Mconf web conferencing is in production!
Mconf is now a production level service for the South African Research and Education community!
Progress update:
- Mconf.sanren.ac.za’s security certificate has been updated; and
- A new user document 2. Creating new spaces, has been added to the Help Guides page – More will follow!

CSIRT workshop notes
On 26-27 May a workshop was held with the community to determine the way forward for establishing an NREN CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team). See our earlier post for more information.
2015 SANReN CA winter student vacation work programme starts
Five students from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) are participating in a three week winter student vacation work programme, hosted by the SANReN CA.
A model for security incident response in the South African National Research and Education network
This dissertation addresses the problem of a lack of a formal incident response capability in the South African National Research and Education Network (SA NREN). The model highlights the decisions required for the business requirements, services, team model and staff, policies and processes, tools and technologies, and partners of a CSIRT respectively. Implementing this model will result in a prepared, improved and coordinated response to IT security incidents affecting the SA NREN.

Invitation to the SA NREN’s Mconf web conferencing service launch!
On behalf of the SA NREN (SANReN CA and TENET), you are invited to one of two launch events for the new Mconf web conferencing service.
Together Mconf web conferencing and Vidyo desktop and room based conferencing systems will cater for the majority of virtual collaboration needs of the South African Research and Education community.
These services are being provided to enable collaboration through high quality video, audio and shared content over the SANREN Network in a simple and easy to use way.
Outlined Agenda for the events:

– Details and features of the Mconf service
– Infrastructure and support for the service at TENET
– How to access and use the service
– SAFIRE federation and other services
